The mission of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity (DMGEO) is to facilitate investment and job creation in underserved District of Columbia communities in order to improve economic opportunities for residents in those communities.
Mayor Bowser created the Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity cluster after hearing time and time again from residents that prosperity was not yet reaching every corner of the District of Columbia. The Bowser Administration is focused on delivering on the promises made by the Mayor to deliver a “fresh start” to overlooked and underserved communities. By opening a Mayor’s Office in Anacostia, we are making sure that no ward in our city goes unnoticed. Mayor Bowser created the Greater Economic Opportunity cluster to tackle the challenge head on, and Deputy Mayor Courtney Snowden’s work is devoted to expanding prosperity through job growth and small business development in all 8 wards.
Rebuilding & Revitalizing Our Communities
DMGEO is working to rebuild and revitalize the chronically overlooked and underserved communities across the District. We’re engaging residents, businesses, anchor institutions, and other community stakeholders in these communities to improve understanding of residents’ needs and opportunities.
Although the District of Columbia has one of the strongest economies in the country, not every resident is benefitting from the city’s prosperity. We need to ensure that EVERYONE has an opportunity to succeed. That’s why the chief responsibility of DMGEO is expanding economic opportunity for those who are seeking employment or want to start or grow a business.
We are putting residents back to work. Through programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, the L.E.A.P. Academy, and by bringing DOES employment services directly to residents, the Bowser Administration is helping residents on the pathway to the middle class.

Small Business Development
Small businesses are the engines of our economy. The Bowser Administration is focused on creating pathways to the middle class by supporting an ecosystem where small businesses can get started, grow, and thrive.
We’re prioritizing innovative ways to provide small businesses across the District with the right resources and unique partnerships to help them succeed. Through programs like Simple Steps to Business, the Small Business Resource Center, Compete DC, and more, the Bowser Administration is strengthening DC’s small business economy.
